Those weird sounds you're referring to are cheers and claps. Listen to the first few minutes, there is very little laughing aside from one joke. And trust me, I can understand this, as it's pretty bottom of the barrel.
Forgoing the fact that barely anyone says these euphemisms, Carlin's delivery and over all preachy attitude in this bit is probably what caused less laughs and more "yeah I agree with that" clapping.

Cuy, This clip is 18 years old so of course some usage of euphemisms change,language changes. Thats the whole point of the routine!!!! There is also something called artistic license used in parts. End of the day you are better to just enjoy the routine rather than analyse every detail, and you still got it wrong. What a fucking true nightmare you'd be to sit next to on a long flight, or a short one for that matter. If it is possibile to bore someone to death, I reckon you'd be the boy to see.

@cerberus: It's kind of a blanket term. Shell shock is specific to war, PTSD isn't. PTSD sometimes surfaces weeks to months after a traumatic event, and usually goes away with luck and or treatment. It can be permanent though. Honestly, I think the issue with it surfacing in soldiers after they come home has more to do with the level of stress in day to day life. In war when you're full of anxiety and dread from the knowledge that you could die at any moment, it makes sense. But if that...

(cont)...feeling still persists after you come home, well, that's different. You'd have an excuse for those feelings in battle. It'd hard to excuse that thinking when you're back in suburbia. Against the calm background of a civilian life filled with sportsbars, back-yard barbecues, and long quiet nights to think about things, it'd be pretty hard to not notice. The problem with the pre-context of post dramatic stress is that the term condition is even used with people who have never gone to war. so it is the context that becomes bad. shell shocked condition context is more correct for a soldier returning from war even years later.
